Image by National Library of Scotland
A gun team in a field surrounded by trees. There are six horses pulling a gun with three soldiers, each sitting on one of the horses. They are well turned out and lined up as if for inspection. There is a large crowd of soldiers standing behind them watching. The existing caption suggests that this event was part of a recreational sports day.

Soldiers at the Front were not on constant duty. There were periods allowed for recuperation, recreation and relaxation. Scenes such as this were commonly used as propaganda, intended to boost morale amongst the troops and provide reassurance to those at home.

New Tennis Courts in Miller Park, 1918
recreation

Image by UA Archives | Upper Arlington History
The Upper Arlington Company built the two tennis courts shown in this picture. They were illuminated with tungsten lights for nighttime play. Shortly after these courts were completed, a club was organized to maintain the facility. Thirty interested men met on June 17, 1918, to discuss the long-term management of the courts. The Board of Directors consisted of Jay Crane, Jay Morgan, and John Fenton.

The village of Upper Arlington created a recreation department in 1921 and the tennis courts fell under the purview of the new director. Tennis was the center of youth and adult activity in Upper Arlington for many years. These two public courts were located in Miller Park, and additional courts were completed in the mid-1920s at what is now Jones Middle School with additional ones at Northam Park in 1957, followed by ones at Lane Road in 1971.

Frank P. Rogers, 1918
recreation

Image by UA Archives | Upper Arlington History
Frank P. Rogers was born in Flint, Michigan in 1875. He moved to Ohio as a child and later attended The Ohio State University, from which he graduated in 1899. Rogers’ wife, Florence (Harvey) Rogers also attended Ohio State; the couple resided at 1972 Tremont Road. In 1919, Mrs. Rogers was elected president of the Norwester Women’s Club, an Upper Arlington organization dedicated to promoting community fellowship, study, and recreation. Mr. Rogers made his living in the wholesale lumber business. After the village of Upper Arlington was incorporated on March 20, 1918, Frank Rogers was named one of six Village Commissioners. At the first town meeting, Mr. Rogers was appointed to serve on a five-member committee responsible for the reappraisal of property and buildings in Upper Arlington. As village commissioner, he was involved in the creation of the first charter for the government of Upper Arlington. In addition to his work in the local government, Mr. Rogers was a (thirty-second degree) Mason. He was also known among his Upper Arlington neighbors as an expert fisherman and was an enthusiastic member of the Upper Arlington Fishing Club, established in 1917. Mr. Rogers was an avid sportsman who was active in the Upper Arlington Tennis Club. He also enjoyed pitching horseshoes and served as official scorer for the Upper Arlington baseball team.

Two uniformed men with a small dog. The two men are sitting outside on a pile of sandbags. The man on the left holds the front paws of the dog as it stands on its hind legs. There is another man sitting on the ground with his back to the camera. This relaxed and informal photograph is thought to have been taken by John Warwick Brooke.
